Part one will des cribe how Jimmy and Samanta first came together and conceptualized a discu ssion series for their community centered on three themes: historic redlin ing\, current gentrification\, and present and future housing affordabilit y issues in the Virgil Village and East Hollywood areas. Part one will als o describe the evolution of the discussion series into a public art projec t\, an educational pamphlet campaign\, archival research and blog storytel ling\, and finally\, round-table discussions with various community member s affected by our series’ three major themes. Finally\, Jimmy and Samanta will discuss the importance of language justice and accessibility througho ut the process of “Making Our Neighborhood.” Part two will describe Jimmy and Samanta’s final installment for the series\, Making Our Neighborhood: The Magazine\, discussing the importance of memorializing the findings of the discussion series in a tangible form for communities to access\, and t elling the stories behind finding the various voices featured in their mag azine. However\, exclusionary union models\, individualism\, increasing inequality\, and t echnological changes in the music industry have also hindered music worker s from massively collectivizing or uniting in solidarity with the rest of the working class. This conversation dives into the meaning of positioning musicians as workers\, building broader movements of music workers\, and how we can learn from an existing lineage of musicians organizing to build stronger movements of workers today.\n\n\n\n\nDANCE PIECE\nRasquanchecias \nPrimera Generación Dance Collective\n“Rasquachencias” showcases our coll ective’s past\, present\, and future works to consolidate a vibrant pictur e of our Mexican American sociality. Dance and music are the centerpiece for ev ery hot summer party and Grand Park’s Sunday Sessions returns live in the park! Grand Park’s Sunday Sessions will host L.A.’s finest House music cur ators on two Sundays this summer featuring numerous DJs at each event. Thi s popular series of free outdoor dance parties will celebrate the contribu tions of Los Angeles artists to the American-originated\, globally embrace d art form of House music. The July 25th Sunday Sessions will feature Astr onomar\, Bot\, Ocean Roulette\, Etari\, and Chloé Soleta\, and celebrate t he pillars of House music rooted in joy\, liberation and dance.
\nTh e August 29th event will honor the sounds that served as a precursor to Ho use and dance music with a day dedicated to Northern Soul\, Funk and Disco with artists including Deejay Clifton\, Liz O.\, Riley More and LoopdropK id. Guests can picnic or purchase food from food trucks and enjoy the soun ds of summer in a beautiful setting right in the heart of Downtown L.A. Su nday Sessions will take place on the park’s Performance Lawn\, just north of Hill Street.

s a digital experience and now offered live in the park\, Grand Park’s Eas
y Mornings provides Angelenos with opportunities to focus on deepening rel
ationships with self\, community and green space. The free three-hour prog
ram will take place in Grand Park from 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. on September 4
\, September 11\, September 18 and September 25\, 2021.
Grand Park
’s Easy Mornings is a public platform promoting arts and culture\, educati

ture a mixture of different activities\, including arts-based workshops\,
wellness and dance workshops\, public art and live DJ

\nSuspended last year due to the pandemic\, the traditional Noche de Ofren
da ceremony honoring the dead returns to Grand Park as a live event and pe
rformance. A co-presentation by Grand Park and Self Help Graphics\, the jo
int event of reflection and remembrance will feature a communal circle and
blessing led by the indigenous community and also include poetry and danc
e. In a continued partnership with Grand Park\, LACMA will host two family
-friendly arts-based workshops dedicated to making personalized calavera—o
ne of the most recognizable cultural and artistic elements of the Day of t
he Dead festivities. Each 20-minute workshop held throughout Noche de Ofre
nda will engage kids to create their own calavera using air dry clay\, pap
er plates and other craft items as LACMA teaching artists show park-goers
how to sculpt\, shape and transform ordinary materials into colorful Día d
e Los Muertos artworks. LACMA will also host a “Tree of Life” in Grand Par
k encouraging park-goers to write the name of a passed loved one on a colo
rful ribbon\; the name and ribbon will remain placed on the tree in rememb
rance for the duration of Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos.
